Try EVS and let the adventure begin!

When you are 18 years old and it comes the time to decide and make your first steps as an adult, it‘s terrifying. Your head is always filled with questions and different crazy ideas. „Now what? What if…“. I was asking myself the same on my last year in high school. I felt so young to decide what I want to study, what I want to do. All I wanted was to see the world, meet new people, travel, but really, not study. To find myself, to try myself in totally different situation, that is what I wanted. Actually one of the most important things in our lifes is exactly to find yourself. What I mean, my point is you can’t continue with nothing in your life if you are not clear with yourself.

And that was the moment when I decided to actually DO SOMETHING, search for opportunities and take a gap year. And I found EVS.

EVS or European Voluntary Service offers young Europeans the chance to make a real difference to the world and to their own lives – through the European Voluntary Service. The European Voluntary Service (EVS) provides young people with the unique chance to express their personal commitment through unpaid and full-time voluntary activities in a foreign country within or outside the EU. After all I read and heard I made my personal point of view that EVS was exactly what I had been searching for and could help me to find myself and to become aware of what I really wanted to do.

I never though that I will be brave enough to do this, but the more I read about it the more I wanted to do this and I started to look for projects. And here I am in beautiful Czech Republic, in Nachod.

My first week was hard and full of new experieces: intensive Czech language course, new people, new places… but as time fly I feel more and more comfortable here. Working with little the ones in Dečko youth center motivates me every day. Also, working at schools in English lessons gives me more and more teaching experience. However, everything is not so easy, sometimes there are some difficult moments: cultural shock, getting lost, but not being able to understand the language in most of the places in Nachod and around is hardest. But that is why I’m here! To learn, to get out of my comfort zone and prove to myself that I can do this.

All in all, I recommend EVS to everyone who is interested in taking part in a great journey abroad. You won’t only gain some new great experience and learn or improve a foreign language, but you will also make new friends from all around the Europe and visit a lot of great places. It is also a good time for you to think about your ambitions and future plans and to find your own path. So don’t waste your time thinking and try EVS, because in the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take!

“NEVER be afraid to try something new, because life gets boring when you stay within the limits you already know.”
